Menopause is not a disease but a physiological moment in a woman’s life, which coincides with the end of fertility. In fact, menopause means the definitive cessation of menstrual cycles, resulting from the loss of ovarian follicular function, and is diagnosed retrospectively after 12 consecutive months of amenorrhea or absence of the cycle. Menopause occurs because as a woman ages, the ovaries stop producing estrogen and progesterone. In the years preceding the menopause, the production of estrogen and progesterone begins to decrease and menstruation and ovulation are less frequent, and then finally stop; at that point the pregnancy can no longer occur naturally. It typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, but early and late menopause are not uncommon.
The decrease in estrogen levels in menopause can lead to the onset of some disorders, including:
- hot flashes,
- sweating,
- mood swings and irritability,
- decreased libido,
- sleep disorders,
- physical and mental fatigue
Hot flashes and sweating are among the most characteristic symptoms of menopause. Hot flashes affect 75 to 85% of women and usually appear before the interruption of cycles, usually last a few minutes and present with a sensation of heat that affects the face in particular, more intensely, the neck and chest and which may be accompanied by moments of intense sweating.
Many women are also unaware of the fact that the decrease in estrogen levels can lead to less obvious but more dangerous problems: osteoporosis, hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia.
SHORT AND MEDIUM TERM
MENOPAUSE: SOME TIPS TO LIVE IT TO THE BEST
Menopause is not a disease and must be faced in a calm and conscious way. In case of doubts, or at the first signs, it is always good to consult with your trusted gynecologist, also to better prepare for this period of changes.
Menopause can bring with it various disorders, among these the most common and annoying is represented by hot flashes.
In general, changing your lifestyle and diet can have beneficial effects and reduce hot flashes. It is therefore important:
- do regular physical activity: physical movement helps maintain an ideal body mass index, a useful factor in preventing the intensity and frequency of hot flashes;
- follow a correct sleep and wake cycle;
- prefer fresh fruit and vegetables. Instead, avoid spicy foods, spices, very hot drinks, caffeinated drinks, alcohol, and too fatty foods;
- reduce stress;
- not smoking;
- maintain a normal body weight because the extra pounds favor the onset of hot flashes;
- wear clothes in natural fibers, light and breathable;
- to rest well at night do not cover yourself too much but use light blankets (cotton) to put one on top of the other so as to be able to remove them if necessary to lighten up.
