FOCUS ON: POLYCYSTIC OVARY SYNDROME (PCOS)

Polycystic ovary syndrome, abbreviated to PCOS, is one of the most frequent endocrine disorders in women of reproductive age (10%). Being a very complex syndrome, the diagnosis of PCOS is based on the use of the Rotterdam Criteria. According to these criteria, polycystic ovary syndrome is diagnosed only if at least two of the following alterations are present:

  • Hyperandrogenism: high levels of the androgenic hormones may result in excess facial and body hair (hirsutism), alopecia and acne.
  • Oligo / anovulation: release by the ovaries of fewer egg cells, or complete lack of ovulation with few and/or irregular menstrual periods. When the anovulation persists over time it leads to the problem of infertility.
  • Ovarian micropolicystosis: the ovaries are enlarged and have a typical microcystic appearance. Ovarian follicles do not complete their development and degenerate forming cysts, visible during pelvic ultrasound.

DID YOU KNOW THAT…
Insulin resistance is responsible for the reproductive and metabolic disorders typical of PCOS.

What is Insuline Resistance?

Insulin resistance (IR) is considered as a pathological condition in which cells fail to respond normally to the hormone insulin. The body reacts producing more insulin which, however, is ineffective in letting glucose enter the cells. Elevated concentration of insulin in the blood leads to several biochemical alterations, associated to endocrine as well as metabolic disorders. IR occurs in 70-80% of the women affected by PCOS and it is involved in PCOS etiopathogenesis.

A Valid Help Comes From Inositols

Inositols are cyclic polyols present in different stereoisomeric forms. The most represented in the human body are Myo and D-chiro inositol. Scientific studies demonstrated the importance of taking both forms, Myo and D-chiro-inositol, in improving both endocrine-metabolic disorders related to PCOS (hyperandrogenism, hyperglycemia, increased insulin resistance) and ovarian function, with normalization of the menstrual cycle, improvement of oocyte quality and therefore restoration of reproductive function [1,2].
